Creating Consistent Characters in ChatGPT DALL-E 3

By PixelPrompt Editorial6 min readUpdated September 2026

Creating comic books, children's storybooks, or brand mascots with artificial intelligence requires one crucial superpower: Character Consistency. By default, every time you generate an image, AI invents a completely new face. Here is how to conquer this limitation in ChatGPT with DALL-E 3.

1. The "Anchor Tag" Technique

Give your character highly distinctive, non-generic physical anchors that are easy for the model to remember:

  • A distinct haircut with unique color (e.g. asymmetrical neon-blue pixie cut).
  • A signature clothing piece (e.g. vintage red leather aviator jacket with fur collar).
  • A recognizable accessory (e.g. round wire-frame brass glasses).

Character model sheet of Maya: a 20-year-old futuristic cyberpunk mechanic with a short purple bob haircut, freckles across her nose, wearing bright orange worker overalls over a black tank top, tool belt. Multiple angles: front view, side profile, and 3/4 view. Clean white studio background, vibrant digital concept art style.

2. Re-using the Gen-ID in ChatGPT

When working in ChatGPT Plus, after generating your character, ask ChatGPT: "Please provide the gen_id for the previous image." Then in your next prompt, instruct: "Using gen_id [XYZ], place Maya in a rainy futuristic garage fixing a hovering motorcycle."
